2015 Justice First! Luncheon

AFL-CIO Executive Vice President is AFJ’s 2015 Champion of Justice
AFJ’s annual Justice First! luncheon promises to be an amazing event. We’re headed to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on April 28 at 12:00 p.m.
and hope you will be able to join us. Our speakers and honoree are all dedicated fighters for justice and equality, and we are certain to be enlightened and educated by their insights.
Our Champion of Justice this year is Tefere Gebre, executive vice president of the AFL-CIO. Born in Gondar, Ethiopia, Gebre was a political refugee who emigrated to the United States as a teenager. A longtime labor activist, he has brought a passionate and personal perspective to bear in the labor movement’s fight for comprehensive immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrant workers and their families.
Our speakers include:
Gilbert King, author of the New York Times bestseller Devil in the Grove, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction in 2013. He has written about the Supreme Court and the death penalty for the New York Times and the Washington Post, as well as history for Smithsonian magazine.
Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn. Rep. Ellison represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs. It is one of the most vibrant and ethnically diverse districts in Minnesota. Rep. Ellison’s guiding philosophy is based on “generosity and inclusion” and his priorities in Congress are building prosperity for working families, promoting peace, pursuing environmental sustainability, and advancing civil and human rights.
